John Sinclair from the Sussex and Surrey Coppice Group has sent us these interesting pictures of charcoal burning in Turkey.
Taken last year on holiday, they show that the ‘earth burn’ is a tried and tested, if labour intensive, method of making charcoal the world over.
These look to be quite a bit larger than the traditional 9 yard platforms still recognisable in many of our ancient woodlands. Here’s a look at the earthburn which took place on Ashdown Forest last year as part of the ‘Coppice Week’
