Alvecote Wood Open Days

Local group stuff

Postby docsquid » Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:27 pm

We are holding open days at Alvecote Wood again this year. Our lovely ancient semi-natural wood is not open to the public all the time, but we open once a month for visitors from Spring to Autumn.

We'd love it if some of the SWOG members would like to come along. Further details are on www.alvecotewood.co.uk - there are directions to the woods, which are just outside Tamworth.

The dates are Sundays 28th March, 25th April and 23rd May. The woods are open from 10am to 4pm. Parking is limited, particularly during March and April as we have to close part of our parking area because of naturalised daffodils growing there. There should be a good display of daffodils in March and of Bluebells in April. You can also see some of the coppicing work we've been doing over the winter.

Maybe this would be a great chance for SWOG members to meet up that are in this area. Let us know which days you are going along

Well, the first day last Sunday was successful. It got off to a very slow start - probably not helped by the clocks going forward and the "Road Closed" sign at the entrance to the road - in fact the road was open down to the wood, it was only the railway bridge that was closed.

Eventually the visitors arrived and had a great time, helped by the good weather that went contrary to the predicted rain. Our little gift stall made good sales including Stephen's first hand-turned wood mushroom!

We have quite a few more events coming up, including the next Open Day on 25th April, and attendance at the Wild About Tamworth event on 22nd May in the Castle Grounds. All SWOG members are more than welcome.
