Cheers folks. I found this webpage, worth a read. He describes the fakes and certain issues and how to use it properly. Paws - might be worth checking your faulty one with his advice. Maybe you have one of the fakes.

Thanks Smojo. Apparently I don't have a fake, but have followed a couple of procedures to check and still no joy. It seems a software rather than battery issue, can't even access the 'set default' button, my menu is all haywire. I might try try a software re-install, have downloaded the relevant zipped files but in order to reinstall need to 'unzip' the Little Acorn files and currently can't seem to find a free winzip 'unzipper' without daft attached changes to my internet search settings. (Anyone know where to get a free no-strings winzip version?) All a bit frustrating, its gone from trying to take pictures of badgers to faffing on the PC.

Ocp, 7-zip is the best free open source alternative http://www.7-zip.org (I work in the industry).

If you're running Windows 7 up, you'll have zip built in.

I downloaded the newer software for my camera from Ron's site, as per the link Smojo gave, and also outeredge's free winzippy software. Successfully unzipped the software, and while talking to Ron on Skype and following his expert instructions, it took all of 2 minutes to get the camera software updated & fully fixed and working. He certainly knows his stuff. Despite saying he didnt need anything for his trouble, I insisted on giving him a donation via Paypal on his website, as he's saved me from buying another camera. What a thoroughly decent bloke.

He highly rates Pakatak as sellers of little Acorn, they're cheap, the main importers, and carry all the different genuine models with a full warranty and repairs if needed by Ron.

I've been watching this thread with interest - tho I'm a long way yet from getting my own wood, one thing that I have wanted to do for a long time is video the Badger set in my Mum's garden and I never realised I could get something to do the job for sensible money...

OK, I've taken a little bit of a gamble and ordered one from Fleabay at about £76 but thanks to this thread I should be fairly confident that I get a genuine one (they are listed as such) so a quick complaint the Ebay would very quickly result in a refund if not as advertised. I suspect warranty would be an issue but at that price I figure it's worth a punt for what I want it and if it's still running it'll eventually be useful when I do get my wood. My only grievance is that I ordered this morning at £76 and the seller has tonight reduced to about £70.... At that price it might be worth a gamble Smojo - be about a week till I get it (probably coming direct from China) so I'll let you know how it works out.

I know you probably don't need telling, but badgers setts are protected by law, taking photo's/video's is innocent enough, but be careful that your not overlooked by any of the fluffy brigade, as it can mean 6 months inside or a 5k fine

Thanks for the reminder, Dexter. No fear of that tho - it's at the bottom of a 150ft garden in what's now a suburb of Leicester and for the last 20 years we've ensured that no-one other than the immediate neighbours are even aware of it's existence. They do drive my Mum nuts at times tho digging up the garden and even into the greenhouse once...
