deer; Fallow or Roe?

Postby Brown » Tue Nov 20, 2012 4:59 pm

Hi,
Can someone help with the identification of this deer. It was taken in adjacent wooldand to mine. I need to plant some saplings and need to know what size tree guard to protect from the deer. I'm pretty sure it's a Fallow or Roe but with one being bigger than the other it will determine the size of tree guard required. Many thanks.

That's a fallow. They can reach up 6ft plus to browse your shoots, and when your tree guard finally splits and falls off they'll shred your bark while they rub all that lovely velvet from their antlers. There'll almost certainly be Roe around as well but they are harder to spot. Look for scrapings at the base of your trees and sharp lacerations in the bark.
