Get in the mood for bonfire night by making charcoal during the day. On Friday 5 November, there is a one day course at the Woodland Enterprise Centre, Flimwell, East Sussex. With your tutor, John Shepherd, you will make charcoal using oil drums, ideal for small scale charcoal making in your woodland or garden. You will also learn how to make artists' charcoal.Book your place by phoning 01273 892052. £80 or if you work in forestry or woodland management in the south east you may be eligible for a subsidised fee of £24. Run by Plumpton College at Flimwell and Woodnet - see www.woodnet.org.uk/events for more information.

Sadly I'm too late for the course, as it's something that ideally I would have liked to have been shown firsthand. I did find some online instruction on how to make your own charcoal, which showed the process, and I had quite a lot of success (after a bit of trial and error). I use charcoal for all sorts of purposes, including drawing.
