Stephen1: Thank you so much for the time you have taken to explain things; you have really put my mind at rest and I now can look at the woodland from a different angle, relax and enjoy it.

Perhaps you could go go through and thin out some of the worst affected trees and keep the more healthy ones. Persist with the squirrel control, which will probably be an ongoing battle. Perhaps eventually you could introduce some new tree stock. Before you do that though, establish exactly what woodland pests you have present and (rabbits, deer etc) and make sure you supply the necessary protection.
