Planting on boggy land

Trees and Plants!

Postby Kentish Man » Wed Nov 04, 2009 4:18 pm

This may be one of those often asked questions, but as a newbie to woodlands, I'm not quite sure where else to ask - are there any tree varieties suited to be planted in boggy areas? Specifically, areas which are situated next to rivers that may flood the land around it from time to time.

Many thanks.

If the soil is right, then perhaps willow?

Bear in mind though, that by changing the site by having less water, there could be a change in habitat, which may not be a good thing for the creatures that live there....

Referring to the BTCV manual on planting in wet ground :-

Alder --Can survive anerobic (stagnant) soil conditions

Downy Birch

Hornbeam --Will well on sites that are seasonally wet.

Oak Pendunculate--Will well on sites that are seasonally wet.

Oak Sessile

Poplar Black-- will only tolerate wet ground if there is water movement within the soil

Willow crack--Can survive anerobic (stagnant) soil conditions

Willow White--Can survive anerobic (stagnant) soil conditions

I would have thought that under natural conditions several of these species would have already colonised this site. Their absence may well be due to previous human intervention.
