Dying birch trees.

Topics that don't easily fit anywhere else!

On sandalfarm we have planted 1000s of trees including many silver birch. All are slow growing due to the altitude and exposure to wind but except for the birch, they are growing slowly.

Is it unreasonable to expect birch to survive in an unsheltered location or is there a disease which I don't know about? Our neighbours who are a bit more sheltered than us have the same problem.

If the site was previously a softwood plantation then they may be being attacked by Hylobius abietis, the large pine weevil, which is the principal restocking pest of UK forestry. There is an article about them in the June 2009 edition of the Forestry Journal. Also look at the FC information note 38.
