There are two courses that may be of interest to the SWOG members these are:

Introduction to Worcestershire Historic Landscapes     £80 per person

9th June 2012

Based in Malvern, this one day course will show how surviving elements of the historic landscape can be identified, interpreted, and used to reconstruct the social and environmental history of the countryside. Participants will be given an introduction to a range of techniques used to assess the historic value of a landscape, including: identifying past rural industry and settlement, using landscape features to reconstruct local histories, and using maps and public records to identify areas of archaeological interest. This field course will be based in and around the Malvern Hills Country Park, and will demonstrate how theory and practice can be combined in the field to create an understanding of the development of the British Countryside, culminating in the reconstruction of a landscape history using the features and techniques identified during the session. Participants will be provided with a range of reference material to reinforce the themes and skills covered during the field course.

Introduction to Warwickshire Historic Landscapes    £80 per person

Based in and around the Burton Dassett Hills Country Park in south Warwickshire, this one day field course will provide an introduction to the techniques and approaches used to identify and interpret surviving elements of the historic landscape. These techniques will include: identifying past rural industry and settlement, using landscape features to reconstruct local histories, and using maps and public records to identify areas of archaeological interest. The course will culminate in the reconstruction of a landscape history of the area, using features and techniques identified during the session. Participants will be provided with a range of reference material to reinforce the themes and skills covered during the field course. Intermediate Level: An introduction to Earthwork Survey This one day field course will introduce participants to a range of techniques used to survey landscape features and create accurate plans. Working in a small group, participants will be instructed in a range of applications used to identify and assess both natural and man made features within the landscape. Techniques to be introduced include: Plane Table and Alidade, Tape and Offset, and surveying with an Optical Level. During the field course, participants will undertake an earthwork survey, producing a detailed plan of the features. All equipment is provided, together with specialist training, and appropriate reference material.”
