Woodlands.co.uk has a YouTube channel, WoodlandsTV, with over 400 films about woodland management and woodland activities. They are currently looking for self-shooting film makers from across the UK to make short films about woodlands and the activities that are carried out within them.
The position is an ‘as and when’ opportunity, so would suit someone already working within the film industry looking to expand their horizons, working as freelancer, or students wishing to fit filming around other work/study or personal commitments. There is no ‘start date’ or ‘end date’ and payment is per uploaded film. Film producers are required to use their own film equipment. The successful candidates would be employed on a freelance basis and would submit an invoice to WoodlandsTV upon completion of each film.
The films are required to be short (around 5 minutes) depicting the many hundreds of activities that go on within a woodland area. The films should demonstrate practical skills, rather than talking heads or artistic shots of beautiful scenes. These can be for both a recreational pastime or a professional working within a wooded environment. All the films produced will need to meet the requirements as set by WoodlandsTV.
The sorts of subjects we are interested in include:
- Practical wildlife conservation, increasing biodiversity, ancient woodland restoration and rewilding
- Foraging in woodlands
- Grey squirrel and deer control
- Chainsaw maintenance and safe use
- Woodland planning for climate change
- Tree pests and diseases and how to address them (e.g. ash die back, oak processionary moth control, etc.)
- Charcoal production
- Coppicing
- Sustainability in tree planting
- Hedgerow maintenance
- Plant control (e.g. invasive species like rhododendron; managing bracken and brambles, etc.)
This list is not exhaustive and we are keen to see fresh ideas and creativity! We will work with you through each stage of production; and expect successful candidates to produce a concept for a film, which is discussed with various parties involved as it progresses, before final film production starts.
We have a list of interesting people with particular skillsets who wish to demonstrate these to both woodland users and the wider public in general. We are also always interested in working with new people who want to be the subject of our films rather than the person behind the camera, so if this is you then please get in touch too!
Below are a couple of examples of films previously produced for WoodlandsTV:
The Wall: A Day In The Life of The Cotswold Waller – YouTube
How to Make Bramble Cordage – YouTube
And the complete list is available here.
To apply, please email the WoodlandsTV team (Tim, Charlotte and Jacob) and include your CV/work history; a short description about yourself; your location; and any links to film media you have been involved in previously.
