The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland has for many year, had close connections with Forestry and Arboriculture.
To mark the International Year of the Forest in 2011, the Society established a woodland using indigenous tree species. The woodland provides twigs to stake out plants within the garden and when established will show how timber can be used for crafts. Fallen leaves will be composted and used for mulching as an alternative to peat.
The woodland is situated next to a garden demonstrating sustainability and biodiversity in a domestic garden. The Society views the garden and woodland as evolving projects and intends to develop this each year to ensure that they continue to be models of sustainability. The Show attracts over 160,000 visitors each year.
