The day is as follows:
10.00 Arrival and registration - Tea/coffee
10.15 Morning session (break half way through)
• Broad principles of woodland in Kent (types of woodland, why they are special,
ancient woodland, designations/BAP habitats, key wildlife groups)
• Broad principles of woodland management (coppicing, retention of dead wood
habitats, creation of glades & path management, woodland restoration)
• Writing a simple management plan
• Grants that are available to help you manage your woodland
• Felling licences
• Opportunities in plotted woods (sharing contractor costs, joint tasks etc)
• Common issues arising in plotted woods (access rights, tracing owners, lessons
learnt by groups such as BWAG)
12.30 Lunch - please bring a packed lunch. Alternatively, the Tyland Barn visitor centre
café may be open – to be confirmed nearer the time.
Afternoon session – Visit to Bredhurst Woods
13.30 We will visit Bredhurst Woods, an area of ancient semi-natural woodland and Local
Wildlife Site which was divided into plots in the 1970s, where wildlife friendly management is
now being carried out thanks to the efforts of the local community. Please bear in mind that we
will need to drive there and will need to ask you to car share as there is limited parking at the
site. If you have come by public transport, we will make sure you get a lift to the site and back!
