Chainsaw training is thin on the ground here - Tyneside being better known for its shipbuilding than forestry, but there's an organisation up here who do (quote):

"I have attached an updated price list for chainsaw courses. At the bottom of the list is a combined

price for CS30 & CS31. The combined price works out at £45 (before VAT) cheaper that if you did the

two units individually.

"The course is a two day course. If you don't need an NPTC certificate we also run a similar Lantra

course which covers basic chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting which costs £85 + VAT."

I'm waiting to book once they get enough other people together. I probably need to chase them up.

Whilst the cost of course includes no nights in the Dorchester the benefits of the course include

considerably reduced chance of death, maiming, injury and damage to property.

Chainsaw courses are expensive but I'd suggest it's money well spent.

They don't remove the risk from using a saw and felling trees but they do give you the tools to do both as safely as possible.

Everyone has to make their own choices based on what they feel they can afford but I'd recommend anyone using a chainsaw to seriously consider a CS30/31 and to compare the cost of the course (and PPE) with the value you put on a limb or a life.

I've just checked their prices:

CS30.1 Maintain & Operate the Chainsaw 2 days £110.00+vat 4 people

CS30.2 Cross Cutting 2 days £110.00+vat 4 people

CS31 (need CS30.1, CS30.2 first) Fell & process small trees - up to 15" diameter 3 days £125.00 +vat 4 people

CS30.1/2 & CS31 can be undertaken as a single 5 day NPTC course, maximum attendees 4, cost £190+VAT per person

You need your own saw and kit. The location is somewhere in Co.Durham?

What is the difference between Lantra and NPTC?

I recently completed my NPTC cs30.1 and cs30.2 at reaseheath college (1 mile from home!). The cost was £348.75 (training fees £220, registration fees £45.75, assessment fees £83.00) and took about one and half days. There was a pre-requisite as well - basic emergency first aid - which put anoher £50 and a half day on to it. Cs31 is an extra £435.75!
