Interesting to see this type of stacking - we tryed it back in the 80's in our wood yard. It does take time and you can't half stack alot of wood in a 'beehive' stack.

There's also a similat image here:

and here:

you'll need to open the images on the site.

Just remember to 'thatch' the top by making the top come to a conical point and turn the bark side up, on the logs, to deflect the rain down to the edge of the stack. Make sure you put down base bearers to allow air under the pile. There is also a cheat - make your circle of wood piling it higher and higher and then when you can't stack any more just throw logs into the middle until it comes to the top - you get less in but it does make it quicker to creat your pretty beehive.

So ends todays lecture.

I think that it is significant that the methods in these links are being recomended by people living in areas with a "continental" climate (ie USA & Europe) characterised by long periods of cold dry or hot dry weather. In the UK we do not live under such a regime. In my experience large stacks of wood without adequate air circulation simply rot. Personaly I try to dry wood under cover, having first reduced it to its final size in order to get the benefit of maximum surface area to volume ratio and stacked to get maximum airflow.

I'll go with that Richard. From experience any dry wood that comes into contact with water will quickly soak it up like a sponge. The beehive stack I can't see working in this country. One dry summer followed by a few days rain then your back to square one.
