Nick has offered us a exciting chance to visit his woodland near Lewes, East Sussex on the 1st Aug.
"Knowlands Wood is 75 acres of ancient woodland on clay soil. I now coppice the wood annually after a period of neglect. We sell cordwood and logs locally. I also manage the wood with wildlife in mind. In the BC period (before coppicing) we had few birds, flowers or insects. Now the wood is full of blossom with butterflies, bees, damselfies and dragonflies - many of which will, I hope, still be on display in early August. Mammals include badgers and fallow deer.
The wood is mainly hornbeam and oak but nearly all native tree species are there somewhere - except such as Rowan and Whitebeam which don't like our soil at all. Crab, lime, chequer and buckthorn are among the more interesting species."
