Love the countryside? Own some woodland that’s open to the public or that you’d like to enourage others to enjoy?

Leading conservation volunteering charity BTCV, in partnership with Chichester College, are offering the chance to learn all about the types of environmental conservation skills you need to set you on track as a countryside ranger.

This 2 day a week course, which lasts 32 weeks, not only gives you skills in traditional crafts such as planting, coppicing, pond clearance etc, but covers additional elements of leadership skills, first aid, health and safety, surveying and leading guided walks – designed to help you make the best of the countryside for others as well. At the end of the course, you walk away with a recognised NVQ qualification as well enhanced skills, knowledge and practical experience.

Courses are planned for the Chichester and Horsham or Guildford areas, starting in April. Fees apply, but there is often substantial remission available.

For people interested in wildlife, and surveying wildlife at their woodland site, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust have a few potentially-interesting courses coming up at their main reserve at Brandon Marsh. I've signed up for some of these including bird surveying, pond dipping and butterfly surveying. They might be interesting for anybody in the Midlands region.

We are new members of the forum and have a 8.5 acre ancient woodland here in Essex. We are planning a green woodworking course at our woodland probably in late April (date yet to be fixed) We may have filled this course already but if you are interested in this course or in any possible future courses mail me at [email protected]

Further to my post above, the bird surveying course was very helpful, allowing me to post records in the approved format that will be compatible with those from other observers in the county.
