I\'m the Sussex representative for the British Trust for Ornithology, and I\'m also a trustee for a small wood in West Sussex where I\'m involved with management and maintaining and inspecting the bird nestboxes.
I\'d love to give others advice on keeping records of the birds in their woodlands - as well as enjoying the birds, you can make significant contributions to science and conservation by recording where and when you see birds, particularly if you find nests or observe nesting activity.
This is particularly important at the moment, as the Sussex Ornithological Society is compiling an Atlas of birds in Sussex (the same is happening in Kent, Surrey and Hampshire), and records of all birds will contribute, although records of scarce species like lesser spotted woodpecker and hawfinch would be particularly welcomed.
Please contact me at [email protected] if you would like advice on keeping records of birds, or on where to send the records so as to maximise their value.
Thanks,
Helen Crabtree
