Alkylate petrol for the chainsaw

A place to discuss or review of tools and equipment, how to look after them, handy hints for using them.

Having used the chainsaw for a few weeks now since switching to the Aspen 2, it does appear to produce less nauseous exhaust fumes.

Also it seems to start a little easier from cold. It now it fires after one or two pulls of the starter whereas previously it would typically be five or six.

@ SimonFisher - another convert!

Seriously, I also find that 4T is great for gennies. I use 4T when we take our motorhome away and people have remarked that the exhaust fumes don't stink like normal petrol does

Aspen 4T is great in petrol fueled camping lanterns & stoves, especially in confined areas i.e inside the tent.

aaah , sorry , can't hold back any longer ! - have just worked out that for a full-time worker /40 wks per year it would cost over £2000 per year extra . If it kept the saws in top fettle for 5x as long then it may work out .

carlight - my staff & I use it full time and as I've said the extra cost for me is not an issue, health & safety for everyone that works with me is. Try some if you haven't already, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure about making the saws last 5 times longer but there are less carbon build ups on the innards.

"Alkylate is produced from the clean gases released from refining crude oil so I don’t think there can be much extra processing to be done. It’s got to be better for the environment if it doesn’t contain benzene and other aromatic hydrocarbons."

.

This is untrue. The Alkylation process requires significant ammounts of Sulphuric or (increasingly) Hydrofluoric Acid.

But then of course the pollution is out of sight & out of mind

If anyone has any doubt as to the environmental impact of Alkylate production then I suggest you do some web searches where you will find a large number of references.

such as

Reports worldwide of refinery incidents, including the notorious Texas City refinery that killed 15 workers

agh , no ! not mt calculations ! will give it a go :

5 litres per day = 25 litres a week x 40 weeks = 1000 litres .

petrol @ £1.30 +50p (quality 2 stroke oil) = £ 1.80 per litre x 1000 = £1800

wonderfuel @ £3.52 per litre x 1000=£3520

opoops that's only (!) an extra £1720 , still if one factored in the costs of travel to get the stuff ...("petrol" stations quite widespread ,even in devon) And what happens to 200 5l / 25 25l containers ?

Not that any timber cutters are using the stuff.......

(not that this will make any sense to tree surgeons , who are blessedly enviromental in their occasional use of a saw )

(richard - thanks for the unsuitablog style support - goes along with not burning laurel(an excellent firewood) because of poss cyanide fumes - just what is so healthy about the fumes from any and all wood smoke?!)

I have been using Aspen 2 in my chain saw for over 8 months. I recently switched to petrol and oil mix and have had a headache at the end of each day after using it. I certainly notice the increase in fumes and despite the cost difference I am considering changing back.
