Both Aldi and Lidl have moisture meters on this weeks offers

The Lidl one would appear to be accurate to only +/- 5%, which considering the most critical measure of moisture for burning logs is the 15-20% range, isn't really accurate enough. Cheap meters seem to only give very approximate guides. I bought one with just four LED lights as a guide, it was rubbish !

The Stihl Meter which is accurate to 1% and generally gets very good reviews can be had for LESS than the Lidl one if you shop around, or for £13.50 from FR Jones. I like mine, think I'll go and prod the wood heap now for curiosity, it usually settles down to about 16%. It'll be well useful when I start planking and seasoning oak, which should be fairly soon with luck once the barn is finished.

I bought a cheap one online. Disappointingly the range is only from 6-36% moisture. As ever - you get what you pay for.

Cheapest I could find.......enter 251798584341 into fleabay search. £16.90 inc dely. Be wary of slightly cheaper (by 30p) supplier. In the small print they say that you will be supplied a copy! FR Jones, et al, appear cheaper until you add postage.

Item 391255451441 is the same meter as sold by Stihl, £9.93 inc delivery.

It appears the essential difference is Stihl just put their own sticker on it. Everything about it, the model number, etc, appears identical to the one sold by Stihl. "One of the best easy to use testers on the market and is the same tester as being sold by some of the largest chainsaw manufacturers"
