I wonder whether 2-3 acres of mature spruce, with easy access, has any value, and if so, approximately what that might be?

thanks so much for taking he time to work this out. And if I didnt take the trees down myself, let alone split the logs etc, I assume i'd get a lot less for the trees.
Steve
steve - yes .
at a guess , any thing from £1 to £10 per m3,, as standing timber .
as an aside , it seems sad that one of your bigger trees , at ~1m3 , is pretty much worth £10 at most ,standing .
total costs for planting/early maintenance must be over £1 per tree nowadays........any road , i get lost re yield classes and all that , being a humble timber cutter .
cheers carl
ps -plse find a second opinion re all this !
Hi "steve rollnick" -
a few thoughts - have a look at www.arbtalk.com - there is a firewood forum
- http://sylva.org.uk/myforest/index.php
add yourself - bit long winded though free
People who do their 'planking' - wood mizer type folk may be interested - how + where to find locally to you may be a challenge
The interest in softwood as a fuel is taking hold as the amount of Ash declines ( and the price increases ) - worth remembering - northern europe has been burning softwood for many years.
Where is your hornbeam and ash? I may be interested in buying it standing if it's near me (hereford). As for values of different timber, it all depends on what people are willing to pay.
