Hazel

Trees and Plants!

Within our wood are many mature, probably over 15 years since coppiced, Hazel trees.

Nuts are produced but only very high up in the tree and in relatively small amounts.

I would like to increase the yield of these trees and have at least half a chance of collecting some nuts before my little fluffy tailed friends fill their larders.

Other than the obvious pruning methods, has anybody had any other direct success with reinvigorating Hazel to increase nut production.

Hazel for nut production tends to be grown as bushes. They need adequate light to "flower" and must not be shaded. Dense bushes are opened out by partially breaking the centre branches and bending out.

You may need to coppice to produce lower, more manageable growth, but coppicing old Hazel can have mixed success.
