Thinning

Postby SitkaSpruce » Sun Aug 18, 2013 4:56 pm

I've got an area of wood that's been planted with a mix of conifers - it's a real jumble, some almost planted on top of each other. Anyone any experience of thinning this sort of area? Any thoughts why such a mix and what they would be trying to achieve? It's a mix of Douglas fir, Sitka spruce, scots pine, larch and Norway spruce.

Almost sounds like there were a load of trees left over after a larger planting , and someone was told to "bung them in over there" .
How old are they / how tall ? What is the size of this area ?

well I think I may be answering my own question
just got a copy of A wood of our own by Julian Evans- in the chapter about planting Taid's wood he talks about the difficulty of choosing what trees to plant for the future- tree planters often have used a "planter's mix" 'four or five different types of tree with the intention of selecting the best one or two to grow to maturity'
looks like that's what they have done in my wood
in reply to carlight there's at least 3+ acres- between 3ft to 8ft in height, I think some are self sown from the previous crop
