lots of fungi now

Postby smojo » Fri Sep 12, 2014 8:05 am

The last two times I've been to the woods has been rewarded by lots of new fungi. Being a fungi novice, it gives me a thrill to see stuff I've never (knowingly) seen before. Yesterday I ID'd a magnificent Stinkhorn being devoured by a giant slug, some small common puffballs, a flush of sulphur tuft on an old stump and lots of new birch polypores (razor strop). Last week I found some weird black things that are called earth tongues. There's loads of other stuff too that I haven't figured yet. Isn't owning a wood fascinating.

Not in my woods. I think they only grow on dead ash which I don't have but I found some in my local woods. You need to make sure they are really dry before storing as they tend to develop mould. There's lots of horse hoof fungi on dead birch which has a fibrous substance you can process into firestarter material called amadou but not tried it yet. looks a bit involved.

popped into our woods on Sunday, and was amazed at the amount of fungi that had grown within a week, here's a clip of them all, couldn't tell you any names to them though....
