The Great British Elm Experiment

Trees and Plants!

Postby RichardKing » Thu Sep 16, 2010 8:04 am

I heard David Bellamy on the radio last year talking about The Great British Elm Experiment & contacted them about getting involved.

I have now put in my order for some varieties of Elms believed to be resistant to Dutch Elm Disease.

From the http://www.treesdirect.co.uk/ £19.50, I can't make out for sure if you are subscribing to "The Great British Elm Experiment" - so have contacted the project from their web page to find out more:

Earlier this year my folks kept me a newspaper cutting about someone developing a few Dutch Elm resistant clones, they were in te region of £60 per plant and he may have exerted plant breeder's rights on them. Unfortunately I'm about 400 miles from my filing system at the moment and can't look it up.

A few other interested parties are also doing something similiar:

Yes no doubt there are people who will exploit any situation, particularly scarcity or uniquess in order to corner the market & make money.

In this case I believe that the price of these rare trees is quite reasonable and compares well to other species of container grown trees sold in nurseries.

That's me signed up to The Great British Elm Experiment with:

Ulmus procera (origin: Upper Swell, Glos)

Ulmus glabra (origin: East Meon, Hants)

Ulmus x vegata (origin: Castle Acre, Norfolk)

Ulmus minor (origin: Colesdon, Beds)

Ulmus minor (origin: Buxworth, Cambs)

The trees arrived promptly and sensibly packaged (pot grown) from:

http://www.treesdirect.co.uk/

(Worth a dialogue with respect to quantities, varieties and price / delivery).

The Great British Elm Experiment is organised by The Conservation Foundation

There is an expectation to report on progress for upwards of 15 years...
