saw horse design

Camp fires, shelters, wild food, making things, children and more....

Does anyone know of a design of a very simple, solid, stable saw horse.

I've got no shortage of trees of all kinds (oak, larch, spruce, hazel, mountain ash), but lack the experience in how to design this dam thing. I tried using my imagination, but maybe I'm just suffering from developmental delay?

many thanks, Steve

The fifth picture down on this page looks a good safe one.

Thanks Athelstan. It looks slightly over the top for my aspirations (hand sawing only). Solid for sure. I was looking for a green wood design that involved fewer parts, fewer bolts etc. But thanks all the same.

I saw a simple one at Mike Abbott's place.

He used two very simple tripods of round branchwood. The tripods are made up of three straight poles and simply tied together near the top leaving a 3-way fork to rest timber in. Make two of these and you can adjust the distance between them to cope with any length of timber. Seems too simple I know but if you can get the tripods to stand firmly or even point them and push in to ground then it should work. It is also very portable!

cutting list:-

6 x straight poles 50 - 75 mm diameter (length to suit your own height/ground conditions 1.5 - 2 metres)

2 lengths strong cord or rope (min 1 metre each)

hope this is of some use

let us know how you get on

Dave

Dave,

brilliant. My retarded design abilities were well expressed in the horse I tried to make, and this tripod idea looks like it could be much better. Interesting how simple ideas work so well, and in this case, with no chain saw being used, only hand sawing, a simple, light-weight, portable design is well worth striving for.

Thanks

Steve

Not really, there are two options. One is you can upload it to a flickr or picassa page of your own and then post the link here, or you can send me the photo and I will stick it on the front page.

I always love new things for the front page as I like to change it regularly!
