August - What I have done in this month

Thinning regen. birch with poor 'form' with chainsaw,

pull up ragwort ( it's the law !!),

find Alder planted last winter and cut vegetation around them (clean),

prune oaks trees ( about 6 feet tall )

camping and counting the satellites - clear skies at night !!

There is No legal requirement to remove Ragwort unless you have been served with an order requiring you to do so. I see miles of it along roadsides & railways. I welcome the sight of this attractive native plant that is the breeding host of some species of butterflies.

I agree with Richard on the Ragwort - We have a bit of it in and around our wood and the cinnabar moth caterpillars like it.

Having said this there is legislation governing Ragwort and a few other 'weeds' (what a surprise!) and you can find out more here:

This site has links to lots of advice and codes of practice - most of which the local Councils ignore 'cos they don't have the money to clear the 'weeds' from their land let alone enforce control on others!
