October - What I have done in this month

An opportunity to share information about the work/tasks/activities done in your woodland during October.

Can be big projects, minor works, laborious, tedious,relaxing, mundane, exciting, interesting etc. The item does not have be original and can be the same as other activities done in any other month.

The aim of this months thread is to give folk an idea of what owning a wood involves - glamourous and not so glamourous.

Try and keep items short and informative - Items warranting more discussion can be picked up as a separate 'thread'.

Remove small trees cut down for firewood to the track.

Move soil to tidy up some walkways.

Brash a small number of Sitka.

Wander around the gaps putting out canes ( with eye carching tape) and spirals ready to plant out tress later in winter.

We started coppicing and the moment we began, so did the rain!

Still, it is looking good!

Cooked my first Dutch oven meal (lamb stew..yum).

Built second shelter.

Cleared stumps from a track way.

Started carving a boars head.

Constructed an echo woodlnad shower.. (a watering can on a rope)

Broke my clearing saw.

Went wandering at midnight with mate and fell in a woodland ditch... (blame it on cider).

and we definitely need to know more about carving the boars head!

making a dutch oven... nyet... cooking with one. Not sure im qualified after one meal, though i must confess it was rather nice.

The boars head is a seriously amateur attempt however i will stick up a picture when its done...

Just finished sitting under my bridge regrinding and honing seven chisels (6mm-1 1/2"). I know that it does not sound that big a job but the time I'll save by having sharp chisels is considerable.

had a tree surgeon cut a large dangerous branch down in exchange for some shooting

Finished clearing up last seasons hazel tops on the bottom path of our wood in preparation for cutting one side of the track and this winters cut of coppice and tree felling. The section is on the southern side of the track and is between the path and the boundary fence. This should open up the area all along our section of the seasonal stream (that has only just got some trickling water back in it!) to sunlight and wildlife.

Started felling some mature Ash to create a Butterfly glade.

Found out it is classed as grade 1 white Ash when a local timber merchant planked and graded it, so have put some in an auction this weekend.
