November - What I have done in this month

An opportunity to share information about the work/tasks/activities done in your woodland during November.

Can be big projects, minor works, laborious, tedious,relaxing, mundane, exciting, interesting etc. The item does not have be original and can be the same as other activities done in any other month.

The aim of this months thread is to give folk an idea of what owning a wood involves - glamourous and not so glamourous.

Try and keep items short and informative - Items warranting more discussion can be picked up as a separate 'thread'.

Collected some items - to assist my next door neighbour having a go at making Christmas wreaths !!

Going to make a woodland sauna next weekend and have made a oven out of a metal barrel which we are going to bury into a bank.

Went to our wood on Saturday. Insulated our sand filter, then made a fleet of rustic reindeer as shown in living woods mag, great fun.

We made 30 stakes for some tree planting. 30 more to go!

Not that its a competition but today i made 85 stakes (not as nice as yours im sure), cleard up about a hundred old tree guards buried amongst the dying Bracken.

Marked out two areas ready for hedge planting in a few weeks.

Finished shelter number 2.

Ate chesse and pickle sandwiches.

Oh and the Pond i dug in July is now full and not leaking despite being unlined...cant wait til spring to see what arrives.

In preparation for a new area of hazel coppice I cleared a large patch of blackthorn with the brushcutter, lit a bonfire and burnt all the brash.

The main reason for planting is to give tree cover in the frost pocket of our valley. The air flows from a field above into our vegi patch and the coppice will break this air flow. The area will only have about 80 stools but it is under power lines so there is no chance of larger trees :-(

15 new trees planted and surrounded by little cages so the trees can't get away! We are very frustrated by all this wind, as the trees we need to get down are too dangerous to fell. Maybe they will just blow down!

I started the thread to give a list of practical items that people do - as departure

- Things I have done in November is... get soaked..

whilst - brashing, digging out ditches, planting a handful of home grown hazels and dragging out fire wood.

And marvel at how lucky I am to be doing something I enjoy in a place I want to be.

This may given an insight into the psychology of one woodland owner !!
