Paperwork, grants, legal issues

Hi all.
Can anyone tell me why a woodland would be sold leasehold ?.
Is it simply so the seller can have some sort of say on the future of the plot ?.
I ask as the adjoining parcel of woodland to my own has just come up on a 999 year leasehold sale basis.
Any info would be great.

Leasehold is sometimes cheaper than freehold and so long as there is a long lease then there shouldn't be any problem. certain rights may be kept back - shooting etc!
