Beech woodland

Topics that don't easily fit anywhere else!

Does anyone know of any beech woodland in Kent or east Sussex ?.

I'm planning on collecting some seed/masts to sow within my own woodland next spring, but locally the woodland is mainly Oak,Ash,hornbeam, aspen, birch and sweet chestnut.

Would rather grow from seed than purchase wips.

If anyone out there has beech seeds available and fancies a swap for any of these species mentioned then that would be even better.

Apologies if I'm being a cheeky bugger.

Hi Mitch

Unfortunately I'm too far away to help - it's been a suprisingly good year here for beech mast (N.W.Wales)

You say you're going to "sow within" your "own woodland next spring".

Do you really intend to sow direstly into the ground within your woodland?

Well yes, I was going to sow some directly in the woodland in a prepared area, thus allowing nature to complete the stratification process....and also sow some within a controlled environment so not to put all my eggs in 1 basket.

I have had good success using both these methods on ash and hornbeam, and beech seems to require a very similar germination process to these species.

Do you have different ideas then ?
