selling diseased larch

Topics that don't easily fit anywhere else!

Postby carlight » Mon Sep 05, 2011 4:13 pm

hi , am felling diseased larch for a customer . am all biosecured-up ,and becoming a little too keen on the smell of 'propellar' !

Does the landowner need a licence to sell sawlogs off-site ,or , if the haulier and sawmill are licensed ,is it all hunky dory ?

many thanks for your replies

Ramorum disease is caused by the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum (P. ramorum). The only known way to prevent its spread is to fell infected trees in order to kill the living plant material on which the pathogen depends.

Although ramorum disease is fatal to Japanese larch trees, it does not harm the timber and biosecurity measures have been put in place to allow logs from infected trees to be taken to sawmills without spreading the pathogen to other trees or plants.

So in answer to your question, no, he does not need a license..

Just had a very important message from the forestry commission regarding this thread:

"... In the case of Phytophthera pathogens you can in fact only sell timber from an infected site to a licenced sawmill once you have a movement licence.

Anyone wishing to move Phytophthora-affected wood from a forest site (or subsequently move the affected material from a mill or processing site) must first apply for and be issued with a Movement Licence. Phytophthora-affected wood may only be moved to a facility that holds a valid Processing Licence."
