or simply make the boxes out of slabs of bark covered wood split from logs.

how about staining them brown with tannin from Oak/Sweet Chestnut bark soaked in water, or even teabags.

Use a coarse wire brush along the box wood grain to roughen it to increase absorbtion.

Probably need to chop the bark & boil it, make as concentrated as possible.

If its in contact with iron (eg made in an iron pot, or cooked with old nails) it will go a dark black/ blue, you may or may not want this, its a traditional recipe for ink.

I shouldnt worry about the paint on your boundary trees fading. I've had my wood 15 years and can still see the paint.

Hopefuly your right.

My boundary just has a splash of dark green paint on every 10th or so tree.
