Matthias Wandel's Woodgears web site ...

Postby SimonFisher » Mon Jan 06, 2014 3:33 pm

I've been following the stuff that Matthias Wandel gets up to for a few years now - http://woodgears.ca/

It's nothing to do with woodlands, but I'm guessing that a few on this forum might be interested in the sort of stuff he does.

I gather he used to be an engineer for Research In Motion (the Blackberry firm), but has now retired and spends his time playing around in his workshop, inventing things, fixing things, testing things - mostly with wood, but with an engineers approach.

Be warned - if you get hooked on his videos, it could be Spring before you surface ;-)

I'd guess that his marble firing air riflehttp://woodgears.ca/airgun/index.html probably exceeds UK permitted unlicensed air weapon power of 12lbs/foot and could be potentially lethal, but then I think he's in Canada. It surprises people to hear that the first early air guns were designed to kill and were used by soldiers. Modern ones are decidedly 'detuned', apart from the Daystate Wolverine 100ft/lb .303 calibre which could take out big game. It could probably fire marbles too.

Very entertaining site and clever chap.

Excellent. Could have done with one of these http://woodgears.ca/jenga_pistol/index.html on Christmas Day as it happens. Would need to put a helmet and visor on my old mum first though!
