I have also been wondering about a living hedge. Last year I cut Alder and stuck it in the ground the same as you do with willow and it was successful, well at least it grew ! and it grows quickly. So I am going to try a mix of closely planted Alder and Willow this year, I reason if I plant it at an angle so that I can intertwine it. Well I shall try and let you know how it goes.
Has anyone else tried this ? If so can you advise
