having had a few weekends using this, the one downside is you end up with an area with lots of broken clays, although they will burn weirdly enough, we thought a better idea was to rake them up every 6 months or so, and as they are ORANGE, use them as hardcore on our pathways within the woods

Any idea what the ones you're using are made of? A quick Google suggests that pulverised limestone and pitch are the main ingredients of most.

A bit of parctise and then you will be able to shoot them nice and cleanly, they break into nice small pieces then.

I couldn't hit a barn door when I started, but now I've figured it out, yup they smell of bitumen SF, so probably what you describe
