A pack of 10 M8 steel washers are £1.98 at B & Q.

Alternatively you could drill a hole into ten 10p pieces, thus saving 98p.

As 2p pieces are now also copper coated steel you could drill & use those to save £1.78.

Unfortunately its illegal to deface the currency by drilling into it, but then its pretty criminal charging 19.8p for a steel washer, that's a rate of £2.83 Million/Ton for steel thats worth about £100/Ton.

Our garden centre sells individual galia melon sized rocks for £3 each. That must make those old farmers in the Irish Burren multi-billionaires, especially if they ship them to the Island of Yap.

We had a woodstove fitted a few months ago. The company "threw in" a bag of birch logs. The price on the bag was £6.50 and there were 11 logs. So that's about 60p a log!

Contrary to popular belief it's not illegal to drill coins. It's only against the law to deface a coin with the intention of fraud or deception.

Drill the queen to your hearts content.

A big box of 500 washers is about £5 from most trade fixings suppliers.

Coinage Act 1971, Section 10;

Restrictions on melting or breaking of metal coins.

(1)No person shall, except under the authority of a licence granted by the Treasury, melt down or break up any metal coin which is for the time being current in the United Kingdom or which, having been current there, has at any time after 16th May 1969 ceased to be so.

(2)Any person who contravenes subsection (1) of this section shall be liable—

(a)on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding £400;

(b)on conviction on indictment, to a fine or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.

Furthermore, if you do buy a log for 45p, be sure if carrying it home on the pavement that it is short and thick enough to be unquestionably a log, and not thin and long enough to be deemed a plank.

You will of course by aware that the carrying of a plank on the pavement is illegal as it contravenes The Metropolitan Police Act 1839, Section 54, Article 8;

54 Prohibition of nuisances by persons in the thoroughfares.

Every person shall be liable to a penalty not more than [F1level 2 on the standard scale], who, within the limits of the metropolitan police district, shall in any thoroughfare or public place, commit any of the following offences; (that is to say,)

Do kids still do that?? In my day we used pennies (real ones) and, of course, run over by steam....... Used to be able to get them to about 2" after a couple of trains....
