Sweet Chestnut Old Stumps

Hello. I have some old Sweet Chestnut stools that were coppiced 8 -10 years or so ago and the latest growth is 45 cm diameter at chest height so I will be taking out an area this winter. The question is the large dead stumps that were over stood before the last cutting, should we just leave them or cut away the dead stump.
Thoughts please. B and T

If they fall could they cause any damage to people or property? If no, leave as a valuable standing deadwood habitat, if they might fall and damage someone/something reduce in hieght to a safer more sensible height. Standing deadwood is a wonderful habitat that shoud always be encourged where possible!

Chestnut stumps will be very very slow to rot, they are full of tannin. It depends if they are in the way or a pleasing shape. If you're not fussed, leave them. If they are an obstruction give it a few years for the roots to go then give them a heave with a winch or tractor to dislodge. Otherwise, expect them to be a 'feature' for some considerable time !

These stumps are what 6 or so shoots have grown off BUT there is lots of dead stump Hard to explain so may just leave well alone
