Archaeology

Topics that don't easily fit anywhere else!

Protecting the archaeology in our woods can be tricky, if we have no idea what we are looking for!

Here is another starting place, and don\'t forget that WoodNet are running a training day on the 19 April on this topic.

A good booklet is

The Cultural Heritage of Woodlands in the SE, (mostly High Weald, Kent Downs and Surrey Hills)by Dr Bannister. Contact Mike Chapman if you would like a copy - I think it is about £10.

Winter is the best time to look for archaeology; in the summer there is too much ground cover.

We have found some interesting things in our woods including lynchets, a tumulus, probably both bronze age, showing that our wood is almost certainly secondary, all be it that we think from other evidence it may have been at least partly wooded for over 1000 years. We also have ditch and bank systems, possibly Anglo Saxon, and second world war defence pits.

We are hoping to run a basic archaeology course in our woods in the winter. If anyone is interested, please contact me at [email protected]
