Tree type: will check nearby specimens still standing.
Planing: A small piece of timber which has had just 6 months to season planed fairly well [need to sharpen the plane :-)]. this looks like the way to start, with fine sanding as suggested above to finish. Will have to think about the cabinet scraper, but not just yet.
