Coppice timber cutting

Topics that don't easily fit anywhere else!

This might well be a daft question, but I was just wondering whether there are standard or traditional lengths for cutting trees to once they are snedded.

I couldn't help thinking how scruffy our timber stacks look with the timber cut to random lengths and i have this vision of neatly stacked timber.......

A cord is 4'x4'x8', so 8 feet or 4 feet long?

Think about the end product, then work backwards.

What are you going to be using the wood for?

What are you moving it with?

How long is the bed of your truck/trailer/etc?

Is the wood knotty and twisted or straight and long?

There is nothing better than an organised site with lots of well stacked products.

Everything is easier when it's all neat and organised.....

Thanks Keith & Toby. The end product is probably firewood and may well not leave the wood. Ideally though, it will sit in stacks for a couple of years before being used and I would like it neat and tidy. I'm going to standardise on 4' !

Thanks

Steve.
