How many trees = 5 cubic metres?

A rough guide please, how many conifers approx 8" diameter 35' high would be equivalant to 5 cubic metres?

doing a quick calculation in my head

Volume of cylinder = pi x r x r x h

3.142 x 0.1 x 0.1 x 10 (v aprox metres)

which equals about a third of a cubic metre per tree

which is about 15 trees ?

I asked the same question some time ago and was given this very helpful link which will help you work it out very easily; http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/timbervolume.pdf/$FILE/timbervolume.pdf At a quick estimate it looks like about 14 trees.

I'd say more than 14 trees to be honest, although that will depend on the form factor. The FC calculation is based on the diameter at the mid-point (if yours are 8" dbh, this will need to be reduced). Also, the total height of the tree is not normally used. Not sure if it's possible to post documents here but I made up a simple guide stand volume calculation that I'd be happy to share.

I suspect that the tree diameters were measured at arm height & since they will taper upwards over a distance of 35 feet it is much more likely to be a lower volume per tree.
