How far away..?

Not from thy wood, but how far away can a pond be to oak tree roots... (big oaks)..... im in planning mode.... cant afford to affect them adversly

My limited knowledge of biology from the dim distant days of school and the more recent reading of forestry books etc makes me think that large trees of the oak variety have root systems out to about one and a half times of the diameter of the canopy edge (drip zone).

We have a big oak growing within 2m of a small pond, and within 10m of a very large pond. Both ponds are groundwater fed, so the water table must be quite high, and we have lots of big oaks in the wood.
